Dear Friends,
As the year winds down the Lake Placid-North Elba Historical Society says good bye to our summer home and moves into a winter office in the Town Hall. However, this does not mean we are going to hibernate for the next six months.
This year we completed our Cornerstone Project, the cataloguing of every object, photo and letter that we possess: 9500!!!! Thanks in part to a Honeybee Foundation grant, we were able to purchase online collections software into which we’ll upload collection items. Soon your history will be accessible no matter the weather!
Summer 2012 also welcomed our first History Camp for the children of our community. 11 kids spent a week with Lake Placid Elementary School teacher Tom Dodd, Director Jenn Tufano, and board member Dean Dietrich. By combining historical society collection objects with online research, by the end of the week the kids produced history projects to display in the museum for the rest of the season.
But we cannot do all this and more without the support of our friends and
benefactors. We are asking you to make a donation to our Annual
Appeal so we can continue this work. Please help us keep the
Lake Placid-North Elba Historical Society alive and well in 2013.
Our exciting new project will be the cataloguing of the Barry Collection (Moses and Stedman) photos. We received a grant from the Lake Placid Education Foundation to purchase this collection from the Lake Placid Center for the Arts. This collection of approximately 10,000 glass plate negatives dates back to the early 20th century. We are starting the fun and daunting task of trying to pin down as much information as possible about EACH photo!
Stay tuned. We will be reaching out to ALL of you to probe your collective memories to identify people and places in these photographs helping to make them useful and accessible to all, citizens and scholars alike. We are looking for interested volunteers to help with this painstaking task. If you want to be among the first to see images that have been hidden away since the 1960's please give Jenn Tufano a call at 518.523.1608.
Your historical society is here to preserve artifacts of the past so that Lake Placid residents of the future will be able to look back, touch, and wonder at what has passed as well as look forward to the history we are creating together. Remember, our history is your history.
Please support as generously as possible.
